Yogyakarta, August 10, 2026 — Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), welcomed Prof. Edo Han Siu Andriesse from the Department of Geography, College of Social Sciences, Seoul National University (SNU), for an initial meeting to explore opportunities for academic and research collaboration between the East Asian Centre, Seoul National University, and CESASS UGM.
The meeting provided an opportunity for CESASS to introduce its academic and research activities, as well as its ongoing efforts to foster interdisciplinary research and strengthen academic networks across Asia. Dr. phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto, Head of the Program and Publication Division at CESASS, highlighted the Centre’s commitment to advancing collaborative research and facilitating academic exchange, particularly in areas related to Southeast Asian studies.
The discussion also explored shared research interests, particularly in development geography and Southeast Asian studies. Prof. Andriesse shared his extensive experience in human geography, regional and rural development in Southeast Asia and the Global South.
Building on these shared interests, both sides discussed several possibilities for future collaboration, including joint research, academic exchange, and other educational initiatives. The discussion emphasized the potential for combining academic expertise and regional perspectives from Indonesia and South Korea to contribute to research and knowledge exchange on issues relevant to Southeast Asia and East Asia.
As a follow-up to the initial engagement, a subsequent meeting will be arranged to further discuss potential areas and mechanisms for collaboration. The initiative is expected to strengthen academic linkages between institutions in Indonesia and South Korea while creating opportunities for collaborative research, academic mobility, and knowledge exchange.
The meeting was attended by Dicky Sofjan, M.A., MPP., Ph.D., faculty member of the International Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies (ICRS), UGM; Dr. Lintang Fadlilah from the Department of Geography, UGM; Adam Taylor from King’s College London as a CESASS Research Fellow; and several CESASS interns.
