[Yogyakarta, July 11th 2023] – The Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia held the opening of the MMAT 2023 Summer Course Program on “Southeast Asia in the Dynamic of Indo-Pacific”. The event is supported by the Office of International Affairs (OIA) UGM and the Department of Education and Future Design, Tamkang University, Taiwan.
This year MMAT 2023 Summer Course Program is a premier educational platform designed to foster knowledge exchange and promote deeper understanding of the geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia. The school brings together prominent lecturers and researchers from around the globe, providing a unique opportunity for participants to engage with experts in the field and gain valuable insights into the region’s challenges and opportunities.
Moderated by Dr. phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto, CESASS researcher & exchanged associate professor, NCCU, Taiwan, the opening of the MMAT 2023 Summer Course Program was graced by esteemed dignitaries. Prof. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T., Director of CESASS UGM, inaugurated the event, setting the tone for an intellectually stimulating and academically enriching program. Prof. Dr. Puji Astuti, S.Si., M.Sc., Apt., Head of the Office of International Affairs, UGM, also presented to express the university’s support and commitment to international collaboration and academic excellence. Additionally, Prof. Jian Bang Deng, director of the Department of Education and Future Design, Tamkang University, graced the occasion, further underscoring the significance of international partnerships in fostering cross-cultural understanding between ASEAN member countries and Taiwan.
Following the opening, the MMAT 2023 Summer Course Program commenced with two classes. The first was led by Drs. Muhadi Sugiono, M.A., senior lecturer from Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM, also the Head of Research Division of CESASS UGM, who delivered a lecture on “Southeast Asia and the Global Power Rivalry”. Drs. Sugiono’s expertise in international relations shed light on the intricate balance of power in the region and its impact on Southeast Asian nations.
The second class was conducted by Dr. Ratih D. Adiputri, a lecturer and post-doctoral researcher in the field of political science at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Dr. Adiputri delivers captivating lectures on “Politics of Multilateralism from Southeast Asia in Climate Crisis Perspective”. Her insights shed light on the region’s efforts, policies, and collaborations in addressing climate change within the framework of Sustainable Development Goals.
Throughout the MMAT 2023 Summer Course Program, participants have the opportunities in attending 16 classes each delivered by international lecturers and researchers. The classes cover diverse topics such as regional security, economic cooperation, cultural diplomacy, and sustainable development, mobility and migration, and international higher education in Southeast Asia offering a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics shaping Southeast Asia in the Indo-Pacific context.
The program hosts international lecturers from 11 countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Germany, United Kingdom, Russia, Finland and Taiwan, and participants from many different universities from in and outside Indonesia including Italy, Taiwan, Russia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Myanmar who join the program either online and offline.
