The Directorate of ASEAN Socio-Cultural Cooperation, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, in collaboration with the University of Gadjah Mada, hosted a Discussion Forum titled “Diskusi Jaring Masukan Visi ASEAN Pilar Sosial Budaya Pasca 2025: Tantangan dan Way Forward” on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Hotel Royal Ambarrukmo in Yogyakarta. The Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) Universitas Gadjah Mada participated in this event, with Mr. Muhadi Sugiono, Head of Research, Journals, and Cooperation Division at CESASS, moderating the discussion. read more

BPKPAD Sukoharjo Visitation

PSSAT UGM received a visit from the Management Agency of Finance, Revenue and Assets of Sukoharjo Regency on Thursday, 16 May 2024, at 08.00 – finish, with the agenda of coordination of cooperation activities in the Test of Potential of PBJT Tax (Tax on Certain Goods and Services) on Food and/or Beverages in Sukoharjo Regency. The meeting was attended by the Head of PSSAT, Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T., Mrs Hilda Octavana Siregar, S.E., M.Acc., and six staffs from BPKPAD Sukoharjo Regency. read more

Muhadi Sugiono, M.A., Researcher at Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies UGM (CESASS UGM), as EUSA Indonesia President, in collaboration with the European Union, the Indonesian Community for European Studies (KIKE), and the Institute of International Studies (IIS), organized the EUSAAP Conference with the theme “Revisiting EU – Asia Pacific Relations”. Taking place at FISIPOL UGM, the conference will last for two days, 20-21 May 2024.

On 7 May 2024, Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies UGM, Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si. M.T., was a guest speaker at the VII Geomatics National Seminar organized by the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) with the theme ‘Geospatial Information for the Archipelago’s Capital City’ in Bogor. She presented “Challenges of Smart City Development for Sustainable Development of IKN.”

It’s related to SDGs 11 and 17.

Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T. presented “Smart City Development in Southeast Asia: A New Face of Urbanization and Urban Planning” at the American Association of Geographer (AAG).

The Asian Geography Specialty Group and the Regional Development and Planning Specialty Group invited Prof. Rini Rachmawati, Director of Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies, to give a virtual presentation at the 2024 American Association of Geographers (AAG) in the Contemporary Thoughts on Cities, Urbanization, and Planning in South and Southeast Asia session in April 20, 2024 titled Smart City Development in Southeast Asia: A New Face of Urbanization and Urban Planning. This year’s AAG event took place both in person at Hawaii-Honolulu and online. Thank you to Professor George Pomeroy as Chair of the Asian Urban Research Association  and Jennifer Pomeroy for  the photos. read more

Strasbourg, France – April 18, 2024 – Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, the Director of Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies-Universitas Gadjah Mada, participated in the meeting of the UN-Habitat Global Expert Working Group on the International Guidelines for People-Centered Smart Cities. The event, held on April 17-18, 2024, in Strasbourg, France, was organized by UN-Habitat in collaboration with the Eurometropole of Strasbourg, the Grand Est Region, FNAU, and the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. read more

Asian Urbanization Forging a Livable and Sustainable Urban Future

The Asian Urbanisation Conference (AUC) 2024 seminar was held on 11-12 January 2024 organised by Vietnamese-German University (VGU) and Asian Urban Research Association (AURA) in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Vietnam. At the event, Prof. Dr Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T., Head of PSSAT UGM, became a speaker at the Smart Cities, Big Data, and Planning Education session with a presentation on Smart Cities and Smart Urbanism in Indonesia as well as chairmain in the session and the Green Transport session. He also had the opportunity to present the activities at the Centre for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) UGM, namely the Internship program, Summer Course, Edutrips, and Journal IKAT at the AUC Youth Scholars Workshop Forum. In addition to the seminar, there is a field trip in the Mekong Delta on 13 January 2024. The next 17th AUC activity will be held in Bangladesh in 2025. read more

Introduction

Film, as a source of entertainment and escapism, has played a crucial role throughout history. It serves beyond mere enjoyment, aiding in reconciling with the past, preserving traditions, and expressing national identity. During the twentieth century, the introduction of film in Southeast Asia varied across countries, primarily through colonial contact driven by various European powers, which significantly impacted the film industry. It has brought the introduction of technology to Southeast Asia, which marked the inception of a local film industry. Films began to incorporate local languages, music, settings, and actors, gradually gaining popularity among the local audience (Ang, 2021).  Despite initial developments, certain countries experienced downfall periods that erased progress. Cambodia, notably affected by the painful political history of the Khmer Rouge invasion, faced considerable challenges, including the film business. read more

MoU Signing between CESASS UGM and SEALC NCCU

CESASS has maintained cooperation with the department of Southeast Asian Languanges and Cultures, National Chengchi University, Taiwan by strengthening its commitment for more collaboration of mutual interest by MoU signing on December 15, 2023 between CESASS and the department of Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures (SEALC). CESASS representative Drs. Muhadi Sugiono, M.A. was present on behalf of CESASS director, Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati. Prior to this MoU signing, SEALC has initiated to host Dr. Phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto as an exchanged Associate Professor in department (2022-2024). Apart from this, 24 students of SEALC have visited CESASS for a summer camp in 2023. read more
