Strasbourg, France – April 18, 2024 – Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, the Director of Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies-Universitas Gadjah Mada, participated in the meeting of the UN-Habitat Global Expert Working Group on the International Guidelines for People-Centered Smart Cities. The event, held on April 17-18, 2024, in Strasbourg, France, was organized by UN-Habitat in collaboration with the Eurometropole of Strasbourg, the Grand Est Region, FNAU, and the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.
Comprising 31 experts from various nations, the Expert Working Group convenes to develop international guidelines aimed at fostering the advancement of people-centered smart cities. These guidelines are pivotal in shaping the future of urban development, ensuring that technological innovations prioritize the well-being and inclusivity of urban populations.
Nominated by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (Kementerian PUPR) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri), Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati represent Indonesia at this esteemed gathering. Her participation at the meeting is a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to contributing to global initiatives on urban sustainability and smart city development.
The Expert Working Group plays a crucial role in advising the Executive Director of UN-Habitat and facilitating inclusive consultations throughout the guideline development process. Over the course of the meeting, participants engaged in comprehensive discussions, reviewed the status and draft of the guidelines, and outlined a roadmap for the preparatory process.
This meeting marks the first of three global Expert Group Meetings planned between 2024 and 2025. The subsequent meetings will continue to refine the guidelines and address emerging challenges in urban development, ensuring that the final framework reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of global communities.
