Yogyakarta, Jakarta, 2025 — An ongoing research titled Bridging Ambitions and Realities: Indonesia’s Pacific Elevation, Ocean-Based Climate Diplomacy, and Regional Leadership reports significant progress. Supported by the FISIPOL (Faculty of Social and Political Sciences) UGM Research Grant 2025, the research is led by Drs. Muhadi Sugiono, M.A., Head of the Research, Education, and Cooperation Division at CESASS UGM, with Nurina Aulia Haris, M.A., Research Manager at CESASS UGM, serving as a member of the research team.
To date, the research has completed its data collection from a wide range of authoritative sources, including official government documents related to Indonesia’s climate diplomacy, scientific journal articles, previous research reports, as well as official speeches and policy statements from national policymakers concerning climate change and South–South Cooperation (SSC). The research is currently in the process of manuscript preparation.

As part of its collaborative efforts, the team held a Focus Group Discussion with the Asia-Pacific and Africa Regional Policy Strategy Center (Strategi Kebijakan Kawasan Asia Pasifik dan Afrika/SKK Aspasaf) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 17, 2025, led by Drs. Muhadi Sugiono, M.A. as principal investigator alongside Vahd Nabyl Achmad Mulachela, Head of SKK Aspasaf.

Further scholarly exchange took place on September 11, 2025, through a research discussion with Associate Professor Morgan Brigg, Deputy Head of School in the School of Political Science and International Studies at The University of Queensland, Australia.
The research is expected to provide a clear assessment of Indonesia’s potential role in strengthening climate diplomacy and South–South Cooperation with Pacific nations, offering policy insights to enhance regional climate resilience and advance Indonesia’s leadership in the Indo-Pacific.
