As part of the Indonesia Research Collaboration, a team led by Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T., alongside team members Prof. Ir. Dana Indra Sensuse, M.LIS., Ph.D. (Universitas Indonesia); Dr. techn. Wikan Danar Sunindyo, S.T., M.Sc. (Institut Teknologi Bandung); Assoc. Prof. TPR Dr. Khoo Suet Leng (Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia); and CESASS staff member Nurina Aulia Haris, M.A., and research assistant Amandita Ainur Rohmah, M.Sc., conducted data collection activities in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on August 5-6, 2024. The research theme is “Creative, Innovative, and Smart Sustainable City Concept for Capital City.”
The activities done were institutional visits, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and observations. On Monday, August 5th, the team carried out observations and conducted in-depth interviews with various stakeholders in Kuala Lumpur. The agenda began with a visit to the Dewan Perdana Mestika office at the Institut Latihan Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (IDB), where the team was warmly received by En Khairul Azmir bin Ahmad, the head of IDB. The research team was then guided to visit various divisions related to the development of Smart City initiatives under the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, including the KL Command and Control Center. Additionally, they visited the DBKL Arts Center and the SDG Center at the Regional Library to gather information on the creative city concept.
On the second day, August 6th, the research team visited Putrajaya, specifically the Putrajaya Corporation and PLANMalaysia. These organizations provided insights into innovative and smart sustainable city planning, green initiatives, the use of technology in urban management, and strategies to create more sustainable and environmentally friendly urban environments.
The research team then proceeded to Cyberjaya, where they met with the team from Cyberview. Cyberjaya is renowned as Malaysia’s technology city and innovation hub. The discussions centered on the application of technology and innovation in developing a sustainable smart city. Topics covered with Cyberview included the development of technology infrastructure, startup incubation programs, and initiatives to foster innovation in both the public and private sectors. The day concluded with further in-depth interviews with additional key informants.
