A Southeast Asian Short Film Festival

Yogyakarta
November 2019

THE FESTIVAL

SEA Movie is a film screening program that focuses on film discourse in Southeast Asia. Film is an effective medium for raising awareness about sharing issues and phenomena in our society. Through film screenings and discussions, SEA Movie encourages audiences to realize the situation as a community of nations in Southeast Asia and to understand social problems in the region. In addition, films in an academic lens can be an interesting topic to make useful discussions.

THE THEME

The theme of the 2019 SEA Movie is something that seems simple but complex: The Future of Humanity. This theme is inspired by thoughts, reflections, and questions, which are actually put forward by many people, and are given a strong emphasis, by contemporary thinkers, from Yuval Noah Harari to Michio Kaku. What is The Future of Humanity?

The Future of Humanity is interpreted, predicted, and constructed by many people with different backgrounds and in non-uniform ways. For some people, talking about the future of humans will lead to efforts to build life beyond earth. For others, The Future of Humanity is totally dependent on technology and artificial intelligence. Others think, in a romantic way, to return to traditional times that uphold local values and high respect for nature.Time is one aspect of the discussion and debate about The Future of Humanity.Cosmologists, for example, like to talk about the future in the hundreds or even millions of years to come.As for thinkers like Jared Diamond, what matters is the future in 3 or 4 decades from now. The vision of the future is a portrait that is actually blurry but assumed to be clear, a portrait that is actually fragmented but is considered intact. In addition, The Future of Humanity can be seen from an optimistic, pessimistic, and at the same time realistic view.

Human beings of this century are faced with increasingly complex problems from previous eras.On the one hand, humans are actually able to overcome big problems with the extremely fast development of science and technology .But on the other hand, humans with the support of these two aspects have created problems that are no less severe on a local to global scale. If described, human problems of this century will cover a vast area, ranging from the issue of economic inequality, environmental damage, the intensity of disasters, terrorism, the crisis of democracy, the rise of populism, the emergence of new epidemics, food and water crises, to wars that are still ongoing in several places. The problems faced by humans today can at least be a stepping stone to arrive at a vision of what The Future of Humanity will be in the following centuries.

Southeast Asia is one of the important elements to look into and understand The Future of Humanity . This region is one of the most dynamic regions and currently in the epicenter of the struggle for global influence between China and the US.Southeast Asia with 10 countries in it experiencing a clash of problems that not only determine the fate of 600 million people in the next 3 or 5 years, but in a longer period. The different social, political, economic and cultural backgrounds of the countries in it cause efforts to understand The Future of Humanity based on dynamics in this region will be a difficult but interesting job. This year’s SEA Movie will therefore try to take part in efforts to understand The Future of Humanity through exhibitions and discussions of Southeast Asian short films as they did in previous years with different themes.

The implementation of SEA Movie will be carried out by involving various groups, not only from the film community or academic community. Exhibition activities will be preceded or closed with discussion activities with special themes which are an elaboration of the general theme of this year’s festival.
