The Asian Geography Specialty Group and the Regional Development and Planning Specialty Group invited Prof. Rini Rachmawati, Director of Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies, to give a virtual presentation at the 2024 American Association of Geographers (AAG) in the Contemporary Thoughts on Cities, Urbanization, and Planning in South and Southeast Asia session in April 20, 2024 titled Smart City Development in Southeast Asia: A New Face of Urbanization and Urban Planning. This year’s AAG event took place both in person at Hawaii-Honolulu and online. Strasbourg, France – April 18, 2024 – Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, the Director of Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies-Universitas Gadjah Mada, participated in the meeting of the UN-Habitat Global Expert Working Group on the International Guidelines for People-Centered Smart Cities. The event, held on April 17-18, 2024, in Strasbourg, France, was organized by UN-Habitat in collaboration with the Eurometropole of Strasbourg, the Grand Est Region, FNAU, and the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. read more

The 16th ASIAN URBANIZATION CONFERENCE 2024
Asian Urbanization Forging a Livable and Sustainable Urban Future

The Asian Urbanisation Conference (AUC) 2024 seminar was held on 11-12 January 2024 organised by Vietnamese-German University (VGU) and Asian Urban Research Association (AURA) in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Vietnam. At the event, Prof. Dr Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T., Head of PSSAT UGM, became a speaker at the Smart Cities, Big Data, and Planning Education session with a presentation on Smart Cities and Smart Urbanism in Indonesia as well as chairmain in the session and the Green Transport session. Sge also had the opportunity to present the activities at the Centre for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) UGM, namely the Internship program, Summer Course, Edutrips, and Journal IKAT at the AUC Youth Scholars Workshop Forum. In addition to the seminar, there is a field trip in the Mekong Delta on 13 January 2024. The next 17th AUC activity will be held in Bangladesh in 2025. read more

CESASS has maintained cooperation with the department of Southeast Asian Languanges and Cultures, National Chengchi University, Taiwan by strengthening its commitment for more collaboration of mutual interest by MoU signing on December 15, 2023 between CESASS and the department of Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures (SEALC). CESASS representative Drs. Muhadi Sugiono, M.A. was present on behalf of CESASS director, Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati. Prior to this MoU signing, SEALC has initiated to host Dr. Phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto as an exchanged Associate Professor in department (2022-2024). Apart from this, 24 students of SEALC have visited CESASS for a summer camp in 2023. read more

Dr. phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto, researcher of CESASS presented her joint project on the Internationalization of Higher Education in Indonesia, Taiwan and Japan in the 1^st NCCU Conference on Southeast Asian Socio-Cultural Studies, 16-17 December 2023. This research is in collaboration with Prof. Ming Sheng Wang (National Chengchi University/NCCU, Taiwan) and Prof. Naoki Umemiya (Sophia University, Japan). Research collaborators include Dr. Wahyu Supartono (MMPT), Dr. Falikul Isbah (Fisipol) and Prof. Rini Rachmawati (CESASS). The project is supported by NCCU for 2 years (2023-2024). read more

Thursday, December 21, farewell session and certificate handover was held for Michaelie Trenbath, an international internship student from Australia National University, Australia. She joined the internship program at CESASS UGM for the October-December 2023 period, which also collaborates with the Australian Consortium For In Country Indonesian Studies (ACICIS).

It’s related to SDGs 4 (Quality Education) and 17 (Parnerships for the Goals).

Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) UGM invited as a speaker at Curratorial Class, AMEX 2023, Sonobudoyo Museum on December 14, 2023 that representative by Dr. Arif Akhyat, M.A (Senior lecturer of history, UGM and researcher at CESASS UGM) talks about Piracy in Southeast Asia.

The class was specifically talking about the piracy and integration in the area. Dr. Akhyat highlighted the discussion about strategic position in Nusantara, new patterns of cosmopolist, and piracy and economy network. read more

Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) UGM in collaboration with the Faculty of Geography UGM organized the German-Southeast Asian ForUm of Urban Experts’ Conference on “National Urban Development Strategies for ASEAN Member Countries” on November 26 to December 5, 2023.

The event began with the Overview and Objectives of ForUm delivered by Prof. Frauke Krass, followed by the presentation of the CESASS Profile and Program by Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T. as Director of CESASS UGM, and the presentation of the Dean of the Faculty of Geography UGM, Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko. read more

On November 17, 2023, the Dissemination of Community Satisfaction Survey (SKM) Results of Yogyakarta City in 2023 was held, a collaboration between CESASS UGM and Public Works, Housing, and Settlement Areas Agency (DPUPKP of Yogyakarta City in 2023. This event is a follow-up to the survey activities that have been carried out.

Located at the Indonesia Room, CESASS 2nd Floor, the event was opened by Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T. as the Head of PSSAT UGM and the team leader of SKM of Yogyakarta City in 2023. The ASEAN Master Program of Master Management, Universitas Gadjah Mada are going to settle a visit to CESASS UGM on Tuesday, November 14th 2023, led by Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T. (Director of CESASS, UGM). Norway, Hungary, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Spain, and Indonesia were among the students who attended. The intention of the visit was to introduce one of UGM’s research centers and obtain information about the course work at the Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies. read more
