[CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS] MMAT 2022 Summer Course Program : (Re)constructing Southeast Asia: The Narrative of ASEAN Identity”

ActivityConference and Symposium Friday, 8 July 2022

Summer Course Program “(Re)constructing Southeast Asia: The Narrative of ASEAN Identity”

Calling out international & local students, lecturers, researchers, and professionals!

Southeast Asia is not a mere geographical space with a passive role in the international arena. Instead, the region has continued to be an active agent to engage in the international discourse that covers the political, economic, social, and cultural dynamics, as well as security issues. However, the level of interest and number of studies conducted by academics regarding Southeast Asia are mostly developed outside the region. Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) Universitas Gadjah Mada has initiated organising yearly workshops on “Teaching & Researching Southeast Asia” (MMAT) since 2014. Starting in 2021, it is held as a Summer Course, allowing not only the participation of students, but also researchers and lecturers, enabling them to broaden their perspective on Southeast Asia region. [CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS] MMAT 2021 Summer Course Program : (Re)constructing Southeast Asia MMAT 2021

ActivityConference and Symposium Monday, 13 September 2021

Summer Course Program : (Re)constructing Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is not a mere geographical space with a passive role in the international arena. The region instead has been becoming an active agent to engage in the international political discourse that covers the political, economic, social and cultural dynamics, as well as, security issues. The image of Southeast Asia as an actor that is capable of becoming an agent, is reflected in the political decision taken by the leaders of Southeast Asian countries to define and to present themselves as one single community, which is the ASEAN Community, and it has entered into force since 2016.  Ironically, the level of interest and the number of studies conducted by academics regarding Southeast Asia are less developed inside  the region.

Responding to this situation, Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) UGM took the initiative to organize the workshops on “Teaching & Researching Southeast Asia” or MMAT Program starting in 2014.

[CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS] SEA-MCA 2021 : Rediscovering Southeast Asia Amidst Its Multi-layered Burdens

ActivityConference and Symposium Tuesday, 7 September 2021

Southeast Asia Conference on Media, Cinema, and Art

(SEA-MCA 2021): SEA-MCA 2021 : Rediscovering Southeast Asia Amidst Its Multi-layered Burdens

Description:

Southeast Asian studies have been matured in Western centres and have evolved considerably in the scholarly literature on international relations which continue seeing Southeast Asia as an un(differentiated) object of study. In response, even given the fact that no other region on the globe is more diverse than Southeast Asia, against external forces, Southeast Asian member countries have agreed to establish ASEAN — the Association of Southeast-East Asian Nations — community in 1967. Hence, it encounters rough roads in realizing a greater regional integration with its own considerable staggering problems and domestic fluctuations. To name a few, Asian Economic Community (AEC) is at its critical crossroads, ASEAN also has limited success due to its own non-interference norm and has its institutional nadir in political and security environment towards Myanmar coup and Thailand Junta shaping and slipping democracy into crisis.

Southeast Asia Conference on Media, Cinema and Art 2021 calls for scholars and multiple participants to present their current works on the umbrella topic “Rediscovering Southeast Asia Amidst Its Multi-layered Burdens”

[CALL FOR PAPERS] SOSS 2020 : Rethinking the Social World in 21st Century

Symposium on Social Science 2020

(SOSS 2020): Rethinking the Social World in 21st Century

Description:

The Symposium on Social Science (SOSS) is a biennial international event in the field of social science organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS), Universitas Gadjah Mada. The theme of the 2nd symposium is ‘Rethinking the Social World in the 21st Century.’ It addresses changes that information technology has brought about to the society. It has not only redefined the way in which we interact with one another, but it also changed the nature of power within society. Amid these changes, social sciences face a very serious challenge. Unless they take the changes into account by addressing these issues or adjust their understanding of the world they are focusing on, the future of social sciences is rather bleak. The symposium, therefore, would take this challenge seriously to make social sciences relevant despite the changes.

It will be held at the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 24-25 August 2020. Hence, the 2020 SOSS invites students, scholars, researchers, and practitioners to submit their paper include but are not limited to the sub-themes:
