On Tuesday (10/26), the Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies Universitas Gadjah Mada (CESASS UGM) continued to hold the Southeast Asian Chat (SEA Chat), a discussion agenda that talks about social issues happening around Southeast Asia. As for the speaker, this 32nd SEA Chat presented Lyska Coyoga, a student intern from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta with a major in Geography Education. Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS UGM) atau Pusat Studi Sosial Asia Tenggara UGM telah menyelenggarakan Acara MMAT 2021 Summer Course Program yang dimulai pada tanggal 11 Oktober 2021 dan berakhir pada 10 November 2021. MMAT atau ‘Mengajar dan Meneliti Asia Tenggara’ tahun ini diselenggarakan dengan format virtual summer course yang mengusung tema “(Re)constructing Southeast Asia”.

Acara pembukaan MMAT 2021 Summer Course Program diadakan pada hari Senin, 11 Oktober 2021 yang dibuka secara resmi oleh Bapak Drs. Muhadi Sugiono dari Hubungan Internasional Universitas Gadjah Mada sebagai Ketua penyelenggara program. Dalam sambutannya, Bapak Muhadi menyatakan bahwa MMAT 2021 Summer Course Program menjadi pionir yang menginisiasi kegiatan akademik Indonesia untuk diperluas sampai pada komunitas akademik internasional. Tujuan dari diadakannya MMAT 2021 Summer Course Program ini adalah untuk memahami Asia Tenggara dari berbagai perspektif dengan mengundang orang-orang yang berasal dari beragam latar belakang. “Program ini adalah kesempatan yang sangat baik untuk mengundang para pelajar sebagai akademisi di masa depan untuk membawa intensi dalam perkembangan Asia Tenggara” ungkap Bapak Muhadi dalam sambutannya. read more

The Indonesian Journal of Southeast Asian Studies (IKAT) just published the new article written by Myrna A Safitri from the Faculty of Law Pancasila University Jakarta. This journal brings on The Prevention of Peatland Fires in Indonesia: ‘Law in Action’ to Implement the ASEAN Haze Treaty as its title. 

This journal calls attention to Indonesia that carries a vital role in the implementation of the ASEAN Haze Treaty, signed in 2002. The ASEAN Haze Treaty is expected to reduce transboundary haze pollution and improve regional environmental governance. The Indonesian government has improved its regulation and strengthened institutional aspects of peatland protection. However, few studies appointed that these policy changes have impacted fire prevention in degraded peatland ecosystems. Based on the issues, this article would examine the political factors behind the legal and institutional changes in Indonesia’s peatland governance during 2016-2020. It is known that there are six predominant factors in peatland law improvement: strong leadership, improved coordination at the national and sub-national levels, making operational directives, establishing a specialized Government institution dealing with peatland restoration, law enforcement, and the strength of civil society in doing public oversight. read more

Muhadi Sugiono, from the Department of International Relations and Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS), Universitas Gadjah Mada, was featured in the Asia Prime Dialogue: US-China Influence in Southeast Asia at the Metro Globe Network on August 26, 2021.

In the Dialogue with Mrs. Shafiyah F. Muhibat, the Head of International Relation Department of CSIS, Pak Muhadi totally agrees with the Ibu Shafiyah regarding the aim of the Vice President US, Kamala Harris visitation to Southeast Asia. He expressed that there was a hesitation towards the effectiveness of the visitation and appended 3 important points: the trustworthiness toward the US as a reliable partner in Southeast Asia is very low, the US is not able to gain Southeast Asia importance unless they show a concrete policy action as a prove to fulfill their promises, and the US really need to change their point of view to see Southeast Asia as its partner especially in the context of the confrontation with China. read more

Since 1977, the United Nations (UN) has celebrated March 8th as International Women’s Day to fight for women’s rights and bring world peace. In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) UGM held a discussion “Study of the Family Resilience Bill: The Setbacks of the Women’s Movement in Indonesia”. The discussion about women in the Family Resilience Bill was conducted by one of the PSSAT UGM researchers, Putu Yogi Paramitha, M.H. on Tuesday (10/03/2020) at the UGM PSSAT Library. read more

The Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) Gadjah Mada University held an “Academic Writing” class for the interns on Thursday (02/27/2020) at the CESASS Library. As an academic-based institution, CESASS invites student interns to participate in learning the world of scientific writing.

Dr. Phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto, one of the researchers at CESASS was present as a speaker. Starting with an experience sharing session, Ita told the audiences that she had been in the writing world for a long time, starting with her love of writing. “Writing is a place to shed ideas and when writing I feel free,” she said. read more
