
MMAT
MMAT (Mengajar dan Meneliti Asia Tenggara/Teaching and Researching Southeast Asia) is an annual summer course held by Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada, since 2016. This program is designed for students, researchers, practitioners, or professionals who are interested in Southeast Asia issues. MMAT aims to achieve several objectives:
- Developing Southeast Asia as knowledge building
- Encouraging the development of methodologies in Southeast Asian studies in Indonesia
- Building a community and multidisciplinary academic network with a focus on Southeast Asian studies
- Encourage and facilitate the publication of works of Indonesian scientists about Southeast Asia
Every year, MMAT is held with different topics and focuses which align with the current and significant issues in the region. MMAT invites lecturers from various academic disciplines and universities from inside and outside the region. Furthermore, participants are diverse in terms of academic backgrounds and nationalities. The designated activities are not limited only to lectures but also short field classes and publications such as popular academic articles, journals, and books.
PROGRAM
The study of Southeast Asia now focuses on the increasing dynamism and strategic importance of its diverse regions in the context of world multi-polarism. Such position opens a wide range of advantages as well as challenges. Among others, its central position in the Indo-Pacific region, and the diverse range of issues that cover South China Sea dispute, conflict in Myanmar, global warming, environmental, political, economic, communication and digital, language, and social and cultural issues require multidisciplinary expertise from multi discipline to understand and study SouthEast Asia today.
MMAT Summer course 2023 takes SOUTHEAST ASIA IN THE DYNAMIC OF INDO-PACIFIC as its focus which will encourage and equip students all over the world to learn from Southeast Asianist about current issues on individual Southeast Asian countries as well as Southeast Asia as a whole.
AIMS
- The MMAT Summer Course seeks to encourage the development of students’ interest, both domestic and foreign students.
- This summer course can become a platform and preparation for becoming young Southeast Asian researchers.
- Increasing understanding of Southeast Asia in an increasingly dynamic Indo-Pacific context.
- Increasing academic dialogue on Southeast Asian social studies and encouraging the involvement of international scientists and experts on Southeast Asian social studies and building multidisciplinary academic communities and networks with a focus on Southeast Asian studies.
- Encouraging and facilitating a more balanced knowledge space about the Southeast Asian region from multidisciplinary teachers and researchers, both at home and abroad.

- Committed to participating in the whole series of activities until completion

The scholarship applies for participants under the following criteria:
1. Undergraduates / graduates / doctoral students from our partners
2. Active students in their country of citizenship in the time of enrollment
3. Students of the lecturers of the summer course
