Centre for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) UGM got a visit from New Zealand again. This time, the two guests were Khairiah A. Rahman, M.A. from the School of Communications Studies, Auckland University of Technology and Dr. Adam Brown from Auckland Institute of Studies. Their visit to CESASS UGM Office was to share knowledge related to international journal writing. The event was packed in a workshop titled “Communicating and Publishing in International Academic Forum”.

The barrier of language differences is one of the issues that Indonesian academics often encounter when they will write English-language articles in accordance with international rules. Looking at the phenomenon, CESASS UGM tried to bridge the difficulties by holding a brief workshop on writing and publishing international scientific articles. The workshop which took place on Thursday, December 28, 2017 was held at Ruang Indonesia, CESASS UGM Library.

The event was hosted by Dr. Phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto, followed by a brief welcome from Dr. Phil. Hermin Indah Wahyuni as the head of CESASS UGM. The first session was explained by Dr. Adam Brown who brought the material entitled “Language Issues in Academic Forum & The Spelling of Loan Words in English”. In this session, Dr. Brown described the origin of English words and their historical dynamics. It is a way to improve understanding of English words and phrases that will be used in the publication of international scientific articles. The use of words in the preparation of scientific article sentences should be taken into account because it will affect the interpretation of its readers.

The next session was presented by Khairiah A. Rahman with the material entitled “Editing the Journal Article for Meaning & Negotiating the Indonesian and Perspectives”. This session explained that international journal writings are also influenced by cultural background and how to overcome them so that the messages can be delivered without any bias. It is hoped that with increasing understanding of the use of English, Indonesian academics will be more diligent in writing and publishing their ideas for the development of science. (Gharin)
