World Class Professor: Research Collaboration between Indonesia and New Zealand regarding Maritime Disaster Issues

The Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS) of Gadjah Mada University continues to implement the World Class Professor (WCP) which is mandated by Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenristekdikti).

After the collaboration with Prof. Dr. Thomas Hanitzsch from Ludwig-Maximillian University, Germany and Prof. Dr. Judith Schlehe from Freiburg University, Germany, the senior researchers of CESASS UGM, such as Dr. Budi Irawanto, Dr. Muhammad Sulhan, and Dr. Bevaola Kusumasari visited the faculty of Communication Studies, Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and the Pacific Media Center (PMC), AUT in New Zealand on 3rd -10th October 2017.

The visit was part of the WCP program that is aimed to strengthen the capacity of Indonesian researchers by organizing cooperation for research and publications together with international professors. The CESASS team was accompanied by the Director of CESASS UGM, Dr. phil. Hermin Indah Wahyuni, and by junior researchers Andi Awaluddin Fitrah, M.A. and Apriline Widani, M.A.,M.Phil, that joined the visit in order to discuss the potential of collaboration between CESASS UGM and PMC. This third part of the WCP program will see CESASS researchers working in collaboration with Prof. Dr. David Robie, professor in the field of communication studies as well as a legend of peace journalism in Asia and the Pacific.

The team will conduct a joint research project that will focus on social studies regarding the relation between media and maritime disaster in Southeast Asia. According to Dr. Budi Irawanto, “This is an amazing opportunity to foster cooperation and joint publications, especially regarding the relation between media and climate change”. The PCM also has an international academic journal, the Pacific Journal Review, where not only the results of the work of the research team will be published but that will also be used to organize cooperation with CESASS international journal, IKAT- The Indonesian Journal of Southeast Asia.

The results of the research project will be published in PCM international academic journal, the Pacific Journal Review. Furthermore, cooperation between PCM journal and CESASS international journal, IKAT-The Indonesian Journal of Southeast Asia, will be soon implemented.
