ASEAN DAY
The identity of ASEAN is not a concept that is given or naturally existing but rather something that needs to be built or created. This ASEAN identity is a complex and crucial concept, encompassing values inherited and values articulated in official documents such as the Bangkok Declaration and the ASEAN Charter. ASEAN identity is not just about recognizing the existence of this organization but also about embracing the values of solidarity, communalism, and cooperation that form the foundation of ASEAN. Therefore, introducing ASEAN is a priority, especially to the Indonesian society as the largest country among ASEAN member states.
The Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies at Universitas Gadjah Mada (CESASS UGM), as a research institution focusing on Southeast Asian studies, has the responsibility to actively contribute to the development of the ASEAN spirit. By adopting the theme CESASS SERIES ON COUNTRY IN FOCUS “Embracing Southeast Asia, Its Lands, and Its People to Forge an ASEAN Identity”, CESASS UGM aims to contribute to introducing ASEAN member states to the academic community and the general public in Indonesia. This event is the second step in interpreting the Narrative of ASEAN Identity, following up on the Summer Course: Teaching and Researching Southeast Asia held from August 1-20, 2022, and the online discussion in the CESASS Talk Series titled “The Narrative and Construction of ASEAN Identity” on September 4 and 27, 2023, featuring speakers from the ASEAN Foundation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. This event is also an effort to revive the “Southeast Asia: Country in Focus” initiated by CESASS UGM in 2014.
Through CESASS SERIES ON COUNTRY IN FOCUS “Embracing Southeast Asia, Its Lands, and Its People to Forge an ASEAN Identity” in 2024, CESASS UGM provides an interactive and innovative platform to introduce ASEAN member states to the academic community and the general public, with the hope of stimulating a deeper understanding of the ASEAN Identity. It also aims to enable individuals to feel the benefits of being part of the ASEAN community. The activities planned include introducing Southeast Asian countries through seminars (Introducing Southeast Asian Countries), film screenings (Southeast Asian Movie), socio-cultural experiences (Experiencing Southeast Asian Culture and Southeast Asian Exhibition and Photobooth), scholarship information (Southeast Asia Scholarship Fair), and various competitions for university students and students in elementary school, junior and senior high schools.
- Introduce and provide real-life experiences about ASEAN member countries, encompassing social, cultural, economic, political aspects, and more, to enhance the understanding of the academic community and the wider public about ASEAN and its member countries.
- Promote ASEAN Identity and enhance the understanding of the academic community and the wider public regarding the narrative of ASEAN identity in the context of regional integration.
- Build a network of institutions focusing on Southeast Asia and ASEAN for potential collaboration and activities in the coming years.
- Strengthen relationships between relevant stakeholders and ASEAN member countries.
- Academic community (not limited to UGM, not limited to universities)
General public (restricted to the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province)
Program
The event “Introducing Southeast Asian Countries” is held on the first day of each Country in Focus. This event takes the form of a seminar, followed by a Q&A session, to introduce each ASEAN member country individually, covering aspects such as social, economic, political, and cultural dimensions. Speakers for the event are drawn from the missions or embassies of ASEAN Member States located in Indonesia or experts specializing in the country highlighted for that month.
The target participants for the Introducing Southeast Asian Countries event are not limited to the academic community within UGM but also extend to academics outside UGM and educators (teachers) from high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools in the Yogyakarta Special Region Province. Participants are invited in a rotating manner, tailored to the country currently in focus, and they receive official invitations from CESASS UGM.
The second event is the Southeast Asian Movie, held on the second day of each Country in Focus. This event features screenings of films from Southeast Asian countries, followed by film discussions. The films showcased correspond to the country in focus, and the selection is based on narratives that depict real-life conditions of the respective highlighted countries.
In addition to introducing Southeast Asian countries and Southeast Asian movies, participants will be invited to familiarize themselves with the featured country through language learning activities, practicing singing the country’s songs, watching local cultural performances, tasting traditional foods, and hopefully witnessing live cooking demonstrations in the “Experiencing Southeast Asian Culture” program. This event will be held on the third day of each Country in Focus.
The entire series of events, CESASS SERIES ON COUNTRY IN FOCUS “Embracing Southeast Asia, Its Lands and Its People to Forge an ASEAN Identity,” is complemented by the Southeast Asian Exhibition and Photobooth. The Southeast Asian Exhibition showcases photos and/or posters, cultural objects, musical instruments, traditional costumes, and more, illustrating the ambiance of the country currently in focus. The Exhibition and Photobooth run for three days during each Country in Focus. In this activity, CESASS intends to involve the ASEAN Member States’ Mission or Embassy in Indonesia. Collaboration with the ASEAN Member States’ Mission or Embassy will add a deeper dimension to this exhibition by presenting authentic materials and attributes in the cultural wealth of each country in the Southeast Asian region. Through the participation of the ASEAN Member States’ Mission or Embassy, this event is expected to provide a profound and memorable experience for all participants and visitors.
As part of efforts to provide information to the academic community and the general public, a session called the Southeast Asia Scholarship Fair will be held as part of the CESASS SERIES ON COUNTRY IN FOCUS “Embracing Southeast Asia, Its Lands, and Its People to Forge an ASEAN Identity.” CESASS will invite representatives from ASEAN Member States’ Missions or Embassies in Indonesia to participate in this session. These representatives will share information about scholarships their governments offer for international students. By involving representatives from the missions or embassies of ASEAN Member States, CESASS aims to provide a comprehensive and accurate source of information about scholarship opportunities in the Southeast Asian region. This session will be followed by a discussion or question-and-answer session. The target audience for this event is the academic community in general and it is open to the broader public.
In line with the objectives of organizing the CESASS SERIES ON COUNTRY IN FOCUS “Embracing Southeast Asia, Its Lands and Its People to Forge an ASEAN Identity,” which aims to introduce ASEAN member countries to the academic community and the general public, CESASS UGM plans to collaborate with the Education Office of the Special Region of Yogyakarta by involving educators (teachers) and students from across Yogyakarta in the Southeast Asia Competition.
This competition will be held once in the second week of August 2024 (planned on August 10th), coinciding with the establishment of the ASEAN. The competition targets students from elementary schools, junior high/middle schools, senior high schools, and university students throughout Yogyakarta. The event will take place at the Grha Sabha Pramana of Universitas Gadjah Mada. The participant selection mechanism involves inviting each school to send student representatives based on predetermined competition categories.
The types of competitions that will be held include an infographic competition, a speech competition, a quiz competition, and a painting competition. Each competition will have 3 winners based on the judgment of the judges and their respective scores, following the regulations set by the organizing committee.
Southeast Asian Competition
The target participants for the infographic competition are university students. The infographic competition is an individual competition aimed at creating infographics from research on Southeast Asia/ASEAN conducted by the participating students. The competition’s jury consists of academic members (lecturers specializing in the field/focusing on Southeast Asia/ASEAN studies) and authorized officials from the ASEAN Foundation/ASEAN Secretariat/Diplomat of ASEAN Member States in Indonesia. The following is the mechanism for the infographic competition:
- Participants submit one authentic work under the regulations set by the committee.
- Participants register online and submit their work along with a description according to the regulations set by the committee.
- The jury will evaluate the top 3 infographic works as the winners.
- The best infographic work will be showcased during the ASEAN day, planned to be held in August 2024 coinciding with ASEAN’s founding day.
The speech competition is an individual competition in English with the theme of Southeast Asia/ASEAN. The target participants for the speech competition are high school students. Each high school institution can send one student representative to participate in this competition. The judging panel for the speech competition consists of academics (lecturers and/or graduate students specializing in or focusing on Southeast Asia/ASEAN studies) and/or also invites authorized officials from the ASEAN Foundation/ASEAN Secretariat/Diplomat of ASEAN Member States in Indonesia.
The competition is organized as follows:
- Participants compose a speech text according to the rules set by the committee.
- Participants register online then submit their speech text along with a video of their speech.
- The speech texts and videos are reviewed, and the top 10 speeches will be selected.
- The participants will deliver their speeches at ASEAN Day, which are then evaluated by the judging panel. The three winners are determined based on the judges’ assessments.
The quiz competition, centered around the theme of Southeast Asia/ASEAN, is designed for junior high school students as the target participants. In this competition, participants organize themselves into groups of three students each, representing their respective schools. The competition operates on a point system, with 20 groups vying for the top three scores to claim the winner’s title. The announcement of the results will take place on ASEAN Day. This quiz competition will be hosted by CESASS staff.
The painting competition is a platform to invite primary/elementary school students (aged 11–12 years) to learn about Southeast Asia/ASEAN. This competition is individual in nature but represents each participant’s school. The mechanism includes online registration, followed by participation in the competition in person. The organizers will provide A3-sized canvases and brushes for painting. Participants are required to bring their own colors. Judges will assess the paintings and determine the winners.
